Madisonville, Kentucky, nurse Lou Coulon was working at Baptist Health Deaconess when she noticed a patient with holes in their shoes. KKTV-TV reports that the first time Lou had noticed this woman it was a few months earlier. She says “The laces were all shredded, and the soles were torn up. You could see through the sides.”
Lou had just bought herself a new pair of comfortable shoes to wear to work. It was her first time wearing them and yet "something was nudging me to give them to the patient". It didn't make sense as she still had a shift to work and didn't have any shoes to wear! But she went ahead and gave them to the woman whom she had never actually met before this moment.
She got a pair of socks with rubber grips on the bottom that they give to patients and wore those as shoes for her shift. Several other patients noticed she didn't have shoes and asked her about it. They posted on social media about Lou's generosity. It was revealed that the pair she had loved and gave away were Brooks.
Brooks Shoes saw it on their timeline sent the nurse a voucher good for a pair of replacement shoes. The act or kindness was also recognized by Coulon’s workplace, who made her the employee of the month for April.
