Most Kids Don't Get Enough Sleep

A new study finds that less than half of school-age children, 47.6%, get the recommended nine hours of sleep on a school night. And this lack of sleep can be detrimental to a child’s development.

The study notes that the kids who do get the recommended amount of sleep were more likely to show positive “flourishing” markers than those who don’t. For example, kids who get enough sleep are:

  • 44% more likely to express an interest and curiosity in learning
  • 38% more likely to finish their homework
  • 28% more likely to care about their schoolwork
  • 14% more likely to finish tasks

Now why so many kids aren’t getting enough sleep is another story. The study suggests inadequate parental care could be to blame, as well as time spent in front of screens, mental health conditions and negative childhood experiences.
